Below is a comprehensive list of resources for our beloved pets and those lost souls you may have found or sadly lost (thanks for securing them). LOST & FOUND PETS
The following are steps to take if you have found an animal:
Make sure the animal is secure.
If you have found a cat, how long have you seen this cat? If only for a short time (less than 30 days), this cat may be a neighbor’s new cat or an indoor cat that escaped. Take the cat to your local vet or pet store to have them scan for a microchip. If a microchip scan yields no results, post on social media and put up flyers. Also, refrain from feeding the cat! They may not go home once you start feeding them. If the cat is healthy and comes and goes, it is best to trap them, have them spayed/neutered, and return them to their original location. If you have found a kitten, follow the basic guidelines at this link and, if necessary, contact the appropriate animal shelter (see lists below). Also, reference the separate section on this page for cat and kitten rescue organizations.
Check for a collar or tags: if there is a phone number on the collar itself or a tag, try calling and texting the number.
Tip: If you have found a high-value animal (example, Frenchie) and it has a collar, consider removing it for the picture. This way, you can ask the potential owner what color collar their pet has.
Check for a chip: if safe to do so, have the animal scanned at a local veterinary clinic or pet supply store for a microchip.
Go for a walk: Being mindful of safety and physical distancing, take the found dogs for a leash walk in the neighborhood where they were found. Talk to the neighbors to see if anyone knows the dog, and be on the lookout for any gates left open that the pet may have gotten out of.
Report the found pet on the social media groups/pages and websites listed below.
Post in the Lost and Found sections, and make sure nobody has posted on the “lost” section an animal matching the one you found.
Social Media: Post a clear picture and location where the animals were found on local social media pages. Facebook, NextDoor, lostmydoggie.com, and Pawboost are great places to start.
If you are contacted by someone claiming ownership of the animal you found, make sure you verify ownership (by having the owner show other pictures and/or a vet record) before returning the animal. The reasoning is that someone may claim ownership of the animal to use it as bait or for other nefarious purposes.
Report the found animal to the local animal shelter (see list below). You will need to decide whether or not to take the animal to the shelter. Some shelters have a foster program where you keep the animal, and it is posted on their website for a period of time. This gives you time to network the animal on social media and time for the owner to locate their lost animal on the shelter website. Taking this route helps reduce the risk of the animal being euthanized at the shelter. Many shelters have a high euth rate. You can also network the animal with local rescues in case an owner cannot be located.
The following are steps to take if you have lost your pet
Report your lost pet in the applicable local Facebook groups and websites listed below.
Make sure you post clear pictures and the location of your pet
Search the websites of local animal shelters (see list below).
Go to the shelter during normal business hours to view the dogs in person. If you do not find your pet, please ask an Animal Care Services staff member to check our Isolation, Feral, and Quarantine sections.
Check with local veterinary hospitals, mail carriers, meter readers, delivery people, and other shelters. (If the pet may enter into another shelter’s jurisdiction). It is not uncommon for a lost pet to wander for several miles, so search at least seven blocks in either direction.
Put up flyers
Keep searching!
Once a pet has been held for the required period and adopted into a new home, it belongs to the new owner. If your pet has been adopted, staff will contact the new owner and ask if they wish to return the pet or contact you. If the new owner chooses not to return the pet or contact you, no other action can be taken. Adoptions are final.
ALWAYS HAVE A PLAN FOR YOUR PET
Please make sure your pet is microchipped AND that the chip is registered. Many pets found are chipped but not registered. Most chips support multiple contacts. Make sure you have a backup person listed on your microchip. If your pet comes from a rescue, many rescues ask that they be listed as the last contact on the chip. Ask the rescue organization if they want this for the animal you adopted.
For any seniors and/or adults who live alone, please have a backup plan for your beloved pets in the event you are hospitalized or pass away. Make sure your loved ones, trusted neighbors, and friends are aware of your backup strategy. If you live alone, post a notice that a pet is in your home and include your contact information near your entry door so emergency responders are aware you have a pet and who to contact in an emergency.
If you don’t have a family member or friend who would be willing to take care of your pet in the event of your passing, consider reaching out to Frosted Faces Foundation. They have a special program called the Final Wish Program. You can make arrangements in advance, giving you peace of mind that your beloved pet will be well cared for. They are a long-established, well-respected organization based in Ramona, California.
REHOMING YOUR PET
If you find yourself needing to rehome your pet, please find a rescue by searching on Facebook and the internet. Often, if you can foster your pet while the rescue promotes the animal for adoption, you will have a higher chance of success. Also, reputable rescues conduct home checks and require adopter applications. This is a way to ensure your pet is adopted safely. Please do NOT advertise to rehome your pet for free, as this may result in the demise of your pet’s safety. As a last resort, try your local animal shelter.
If your reasons for rehoming are due to food and or pet care costs, please read the resources we have listed at the bottom of this page.
